What is an Emerald Ash Borer?

The Emerald Ash Borer is an Asian, wood-boring beetle that was discovered in Detroit, Michigan, in 2002. While it is no bigger than a penny, this invasive pest has caused considerable economic and environmental damage throughout Ohio – including many areas near Dayton. Female insects lay eggs inside the tissue of the tree, then larvae chew through the underside of the bark, starving the tree of nutrients, while adults feed on the leaves.

Signs of an Infestation

  • Dieback in the tree canopy
  • New sprouts excessively forming from the tree’s base
  • D-shaped holes in the bark where beetles have exited
  • Woodpecker damage (they like to feed on the larvae)
  • Bark splitting
  • Thinning crown
